How cloud editing can let you create content remotely this Work From Home Day

$

Today is officially National Work From Home Day. With fast internet connections and easy access to collaborative applications like Slack or Skype, it’s easier to work remotely than ever before. But for those involved in professional video production, dedicated editing suites, high-resolution content and large file sizes can act as a road block to working remotely.

That is, unless you deploy a cloud-based MAM system. When working between remote locations, production teams need access to their organization’s media assets, meaning that they’re forced to send high-resolution files from place to place. This takes up valuable time and means editors can’t begin working until file transfers are complete. Then once edits are completed, exports and work in progress files need to be transferred back to the home production facility.

But by rolling out a cloud infrastructure within your production process, content producers can quickly access and edit rushes no matter where they are by sending or streaming proxy files from source to edit. Without having to transfer every high-resolution file they want to view, editors can easily be like everyone else – and work from home.

Working remotely isn’t the only benefit to using a cloud-based MAM, there are plenty of reasons to go off-premise with your post-production workflow. Not only does a cloud MAM allow easy remote working but it can also bring substantial cost and resource savings. Cloud archive systems and the use of proxies can reduce online storage costs by up to 78%, and having access to high-resolution assets stored a thousand miles away prevents unnecessary duplication of assets between locations.

If you want to know more about the benefits of a cloud-based MAM, read about it here in James Varndell’s article ‘Using the cloud to maximize the benefits of an asset management system’ on our blog.

So if you’re not already using a cloud-enabled MAM system, now is your chance. Get in touch with IPV to get your editors ready for the next National Work From Home Day.

We’re very excited to announce that this year – for the first time – we’ll be exhibiting at the Media Production Show in London, setting up camp alongside partners Jigsaw24, on stand #200.

Across the two-day event, we’ll be running demos of our Curator platform, showing visitors how the platform can benefit creative agencies that manage assets and produce media for multiple brands at once. By deploying an asset management and workflow system like Curator, we’ll show how those users can more easily collaborate on content production and increase both the quality and quantity of output.

And for an audience that manages media of multiple brands at once, our Curator demonstrations will show how agencies can structure assets and work-in-progress content by brand, product or campaign. This not only allows faster and easier search and discovery functionality but also means users can allow or restrict access using those same structures, for better protection of brand assets.

Jigsaw24 provides technology solutions for many large businesses, creative professionals, media companies and education institutions. It helps content production agencies deploy systems and integrating tools like Curator with leading production tools such as Adobe’s creative suite to improve the efficiency of production workflows.

July’s issue of FEED Magazine – the fourth edition of the magazine – saw IPV’s head of presales, Alex Ferris take part in a roundtable discussion where he gave advice on what technology was best to deploy in order to launch a new, hypothetical news service.

Alex joined representatives from Brightcove and Grass Valley to talk about deploying AI in production workflows, using technology to detect fake news and how to easily produce content from the field when connectivity is limited.

When asked about what gear an emerging news service should invest in to get it started for the first year and what the major technology investments should be in the years ahead, Alex said:

“Putting in place tools that speed up the overall management of the production workflow should be the first port of call. To deliver news programming to audiences quickly, the technologies employed need to let content creators do their jobs as quickly and as easily as possible.

A media management system would be recommended. They’re now so much more than software facias that helps you categorize content. They’re a means to more easily manage overall projects from start to finish. The beauty of the latest systems is that they can be deployed on-premise, in the cloud or as a mixture of the two. This non-centralized deployment is a key technology investment that will bring about many benefits – now and in the future. For a news operation it can maximize reporting from the field because media can be remotely ingested into the system and made available to editors’ post-production workflows within minutes of it being shot on location.”

In the article, Alex gave his thoughts on the best distribution model and how to make money from a news service. To read it in full head to the online version of FEED Magazine here.

In what’s already been a very busy summer of sport, later this month IPV will join representatives from several leading broadcasters, OTT outlets, sports leagues and teams as the SVG Sports Content Management and Storage Forum tees off in New York for another year.

As the event’s delegates huddle to talk best practices around managing live content in the fast-paced sports environment, our own Ewan Johnston will be on site, serving up a demo of the Curator platform. With the ability to log and edit on live content, we’ll be showing how stakeholders from the sports world can give themselves homefield advantage by deploying the right kind of media management workflow.

With the correct system in place, users can log quickly and accurately, improving the quality of metadata and making it easier to find content later. Sports-specific loggers allow users to access just the metadata that’s relevant to the game they’re logging, with constantly updating player rosters. This means editors can quickly produce highlights reels using live content, as well finding and monetizing stored assets more easily.

Our demos will take place alongside partners StoreExcel, who we’ve teamed up with on several customer deployments including Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, content creators for Altitude Sports and Entertainment. The group put in place Curator to better manage assets across its multiple sports channels and to deliver media to the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver – the home of the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche.

If you’re making your way to the event, come and say hi – the Sports Content Management and Storage Forum kicks off at The Westin New York at Times Square on Wednesday, July 25.

Or if you’d like to score some more information on how Curator can help your sports-based workflow, get in touch today.

Using Curator for Adobe to work anywhere in the world through remote editing

An integrated content production workflow brings multiple benefits to users. In this new video, Rebecca Lindley from IPV explains how. By integrating IPV’s Curator asset management platform with Adobe Premiere, editors can benefit from expanded functions like remote editing.

Giving an editor access to media wherever they are allows them to work as efficiently as possible. This is the case even if assets are stored thousands of miles away. Providing the functionality for remote editing creates longer working days and lets users edit from their own workstations. It also lets operators access a wider pool of talent

Here’s Rebecca explaining how Curator for Adobe helps producers and editors work collaboratively wherever they are in the world.

Video transcript:

Victoria is in New York with high-res video. She needs an editor based in LA to work on content that’s far too large to send. After registering the media in Curator and saving the high res video onto her on premises storage, she uses Curator Clip Link to create a production task and can preload the project bins with content. She ensures that the project has correct metadata against it so that it can be easily identified later.

Let’s jump to Premiere in LA…

This editor has just found and checked out the production task that Rebecca created. You can see the sequence settings and media items they need are already there.

Using Curator’s search tools directly inside the panel means that it’s easy for them to find the clip they need. Editors in remote locations open a frame-accurate low-resolution video stream directly inside the Premiere project Bin.

They can view the stream in the source monitor to see metadata markers along the timeline.  New markers appear automatically – check out Curator Logger for more information on this.

The editor can use the standard Premiere toolset to work on their content. By pressing export they can select from a list of options. In this case they’ve selected remote conform, which will use a remote AME to render the sequence against the original source. If the high-res has been moved offline, Curator will manage the automatic restore from archive, whether it’s from LTO, object or cloud platforms.

Once they’ve finished working on the project, they’ll check it back in.

The same project can be checked out again straight away anywhere in the world. So in New York, Victoria can swap the editor’s project bin contents and sequences for the high-res assets on her online storage, allowing her to continue editing.

IPV’s new Curator Ingest Director lets content producers take better control of live media

New workflow management tool enables fast multi-camera ingest and easier metadata tagging of live media

Cambridge, UK. September 3, 2018 – To provide users with the most effective way to ingest live media, asset management technology specialist IPV has introduced Curator Ingest Director. The new functionality acts as the first port of call for live content producers using the Curator media asset management product. It provides the fastest way to manage the ingest of live media feeds while adding highly-detailed metadata.

Ingest Director avoids the need for content producers to deploy any more resources than needed. Metadata tagging can be done while ingesting multiple live camera feeds directly into their MAM system. Ahead of recording, operators can prepare by creating placeholder assets and associating relevant metadata to them. Then as camera feeds are recorded, live media assets take the place of the dummy media. Live, users only need to add action-specific metadata because the important tags and information are transferred from the original placeholder. This provides post-production operators with live media that features more descriptive, accurate metadata without any additional resources at the front end.

Addressing the live media environment

“Ingesting media into your media asset management system should be the most important stage of the content production chain. Everything you do here can affect other users further down the line,” said James Varndell, IPV product manager. “In the fast environment of a live media production, metadata is commonly the first thing that’s dismissed because it can be time consuming. Ingest Director lets operators associate descriptive metadata faster than ever. This benefits everyone in the post-production process.”

The Ingest Director’s functionality is ideally suited to instances in which permanent cameras are in place. If they know what objects or subjects will always be in shot, users can create presets with associated metadata for each camera. Then during ingest they only need to add event-specific metadata tags. And when deployed for the ingest of live sports media, operators can pre-program sport-, team- or player-specific tags so they appear immediately on content ingest. They only need to add the specifics of a play or an action and still benefit from much more detailed metadata.

Engineered to be as easy to use as possible, Ingest Director features a simple colour-coding shown in the Curator system. This provides an overview of its status whether it’s recording, waiting or set to delayed record. It also provides a timecode on all live media ingest feeds and gives users the ability to start and stop single or multiple feeds. Collections – or groups of clips – can also be created as placeholders either before ingest or live. These collections can be searched for as a whole in Ingest Director, making for much easier search and discovery functions for post-production. This collections-orientated functionality also means users don’t need to associate each camera angle with the placeholder asset and name them manually. Instead, they’re able to to load the entire collection and Ingest Director intelligently records each angle into the correct assets.

Curator Ingest Director is available for deployment now in existing Curator workflows.

If you think Ingest Director can help you take control of your live content ingest, why not get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.

Introducing new Curator features: How PEA simplifies hybrid cloud deployments

$

The use of cloud video workflows is becoming increasingly common in Media & Entertainment.  In fact, Devoncroft has predicted a 58% increase in adoption over the next two years (according to the Devoncroft, The Media and Entertainment Cloud Adoption Index, December 2017). Users of our Curator platform are no exception. As many as 75% of our recent asset management solutions deployments include cloud technology.

So to make this adoption as easy as possible, our development team has been working hard on new features. The latest of these is Curator’s new Process Engine Agent – or PEA as it’s become affectionately known. PEA extends Curator’s workflow capacity and brings several benefits when operating hybrid cloud video workflows. These include easier configuration across multiple sites, a smaller on-premise footprint and greater scalability.

What are hybrid cloud video workflows?

To clarify what we mean, hybrid cloud deployments are a popular model of asset management deployment. They give users the benefits of the cloud’s accessibility and global reach. But they also recognize that shifting all your media files and video production workflows to the cloud overnight isn’t realistic.

In hybrid cloud deployments, media asset management services and proxy storage is moved from on-premise servers to cloud instances. Ingest, archive and file movement services remain on-premise to avoid having to move large files to the cloud.

Curator's PEA provides better remote editing capabilities

Curator Process Engine Agent

Within an asset management system, there needs to be an orchestrator of the workflow. This is a tool that manages several functions including ingesting content, exporting edited projects, archiving hi-res files and more. Typically this has been done in Curator by Process Engine. During content ingest there’s often a need for the Process Engine to ingest more than 10,000 assets a week. This can lead to job queuing as typical server infrastructures limit the number of concurrent Process Engine ingest workflows to 50.

We’ve introduced the PEA to extend the capabilities of Process Engine specifically within hybrid cloud video workflows. It’s scalable, easy to deploy, has a small on-premise footprint and offers new options for redundancy and disaster recovery.

The PEA takes the core workflow capabilities of the Process Engine and lets you to run them in any location creating cloud video workflows. Let’s take a look at how it benefits a MAM infrastructure with multiple remote locations.

You can see that the PEA has been scaled with two instances in New York and three in LA. Not only does this demonstrate scalability, but also resilience. If one of the LA PEAs was to go offline then jobs would be sent to the remaining two. On top of this, overheads are greatly reduced because the controlling, cloud-based process engine can execute small workflow activities through the PEAs. This removes the need to deploy complete workflows in both New York and LA. And it  makes it far easier to onboard new remote locations to your Curator system.

Managing agents

Agents are managed by the Curator Device Director. They can be grouped, jobs prioritized and all PEAs managed from a single user interface. This shows both online/offline statuses and a view of currently running jobs.

Overall, Process Engine Agent makes it far easier to deploy Curator in a hybrid cloud architecture. It also allows the easy addition of new locations to your existing Curator system and scale your workflow capacity considering peaks in demand and the need for redundancy.

James Luff, our senior technical operations engineer, said: “With the new Process Engine Agent we can design far better hybrid cloud architectures. Its integration with Device Director lets users benefit from better scalability, resilience and improved prioritization of workflows. The ultimate goal of this is to help you create and manage more content.”

How do I get Process Engine Agent?

Curator Process Engine Agent will available from September 2018 and can be deployed as part of any new or existing Curator deployments.

IPV and ROOT6 Technology integration automates workflows to leave more time for creativity

Asset management tool Curator incorporates ContentAgent API to further speed up post-production workflows

In order to provide a higher level of workflow automation, media technology specialist IPV has partnered with ROOT6 Technology. The partnership sees the Curator asset management software integrated with the automation specialist’s ContentAgent workflow management tool. The combined technology automates a range of functionality during both content input and output to unlock faster post-production workflows.

Curator’s flexible designed means that it can easily integrate with a range of tools that complement  its workflow-enhancing functionality, and ROOT6 Technology’s ContentAgent is a great example of this. The API integration helps to consolidate workflow processes by letting users complete multiple tasks at once. This lets editors make best use of Curator by focussing on the creative elements of their projects, rather than on time-consuming administrative tasks.

Automatic media delivery

Curator’s integration with Adobe Premiere Pro CC and After Effects CC allows users to quickly find relevant clips and create new content using high-quality streaming proxies. This means that they can easily access and work with content, even if they’re not in the same location as the high resolution files. Once they’ve edited through Curator, ContentAgent’s direct API integration lets users automatically complete tasks such as exporting content in different codecs for each media platform. This removes the need for users to do this manually, so they have time to produce more valuable content instead. Through ContentAgent, editors can add timecodes, watermarks and more to media from within Curator. The joint IPV / ROOT6 Technology solution allows the automation of video delivery when using transfer engines like Aspera or FileCatalyst. It also lets users transcode media – all while being quality controlled.

Built-in progress and status monitoring also lets users keep track of multiple projects, rather than needing to focus on only one piece of content at a time.

Speeding up workflows

To ensure a faster workflow from start to finish, Curator works with ROOT6 Technology’s CardAgent to enable editors to automatically select and preview clips, add in-and-outpoints, rename clips and add custom metadata where required. This information will automatically be populated in Curator. The ContentAgent workflow lets users stitch together clips or transcode these individually for a smoother edit. Curator gives editors are given peace of mind that content is ingested exactly as it should be and the original file structure retained. Once they’re ingested, the stitched files are made available for social media and web editing through Curator, and proxy versions are created to allow viewing anywhere in the world.

All of this can be overseen and controlled through the Curator management interface. At the same time, Curator Analytics can be used to provide a clear overview of exactly where and when all of these processes are happening, so it’s easy to identify bottlenecks and savings opportunities. This allows users to monitor every step and plan the next move.

All sizes, one file

The integrated Curator and ContentAgent workflow allows for multiple versions of the same media to be associated as a single clip within Curator, rather than having duplicated files in different resolutions – UHD, HD and proxy. This removes the need to wade through multiple versions of media, making it easier to keep track of assets. It also makes it easier to edit content in different resolutions as needed for different video platforms – whether it’s for social video or broadcast.

“It’s important for us to help our users work as efficiently as possible by automating previously time-consuming tasks and allowing editors to use their content further and faster,” said IPV’s product manager, James Varndell. “It’s for this reason that we’ve integrated Curator with ContentAgent. We want to give users more time for creativity during production.”

James Varndell tells TVBEurope’s readers why watch folders aren’t the best option for content ingest

In the October edition of TVBEurope – which is out this week – our product manager James Varndell talks about media asset management content ingest issues. With several technology vendors marketing watch folders, James explains the technology’s limitations and what other better options there are for the ingest of assets from on-location shoots into your media asset management system.

The article outlines where users can benefit from watch folders, a functionality in which a chosen application will watch a folder in a specified location, and undertake an action whenever something is added to it. In his article, James explains that throughout post-production this should be a welcome prospect. But for the content ingest, it’s risky-business because it’s a process that needs to be done with precision and thought.

Why better workflow management is preferred for media asset management

Instead, we recommend the use of high-grade workflow management tools that are linked to an media asset management system. This lets users ingest production media, add metadata and more easily choose where content should be saved. That means it remains beneficial to editors right the way throughout the production chain.

Deploying these workflow management tools, systems like Curator can make sure assets remain completely in-tact. This means editors have everything they need in their media asset management system to create the best possible content. So they won’t have to start edits with incomplete information, ultimately providing a much more efficient process and saving expensive time-consuming operations.

You can read the full article Why watch folders won’t meet your content ingest needs in this month’s issue of TVBEurope available here.

For more information on the best way to ingest your media so that you can make the most of it, get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.

Curator Project Connect – workflow automation that eliminates unused media files and saves on storage

Making a change to your creative workflow or infrastructure can be a daunting prospect. And with IBM estimating that change management causes 53% of software projects to fail, you need to make it as easy as possible for your team to start using new systems. This is where workflow automation tools come in.
To help our users manage change, we’re always developing new features that make it easy for creative teams to improve their workflows. The latest of these is Curator Project Connect, a workflow automation tool that automates the registration of Adobe project files into Curator. In the process, it automatically captures metadata and identifies unused media files. And if you’re migrating to a new storage infrastructure, the tool also enables the migration of entire projects.

James Varndell explains how to use workflow automation to eliminate unused data and save on storage

The challenge of storing projects

Creative teams are commonly faced with ever-increasing demand for better storage workflows. But they don’t always have a way of determining where media files are used and which can be removed to free up space. Curator solves that problem by managing all new projects. In doing so, we’ve been able to help significantly reduce storage demands. But what about all the projects that you’ve already created?

When working to a deadline, creative teams often need to prioritize their time. This means that processes like storage can take a back seat. Then, without the time to go back and cleanup media files that were created but didn’t make the final cut, thousands of unused media files can occupy valuable storage space.
This is especially the case as more creative teams adopt new applications like cloud or object storage. This movement of media files often results in missing file location references within projects. After a storage migration, editors shouldn’t need to spend valuable time manually relinking files.

Curator Project Connect

To make it easier for users to begin managing their storage we’ve created Curator Project Connect. This new workflow automation feature lets Adobe projects be easily registered from existing file storage into Curator. Removing the need for manual processes, Project Connect automatically registers all of a project’s files and metadata.

The metadata element of this is especially important because it tends to be far more valuable than just a media file’s name. No information can be gleaned from a file called B001_C073_0902Q0_001 if it’s named so by a camera card.

Whereas, a project called “Winter Latte Promo 2018 v1” gives us much more detail about what files are likely being used. And we can assume that using “winter” and “coffee” metadata tags will help us find these related files at a later date if needed.

Once Curator Project Connect has ingested your projects and media, the workflow automation tool shows you which files you’re storing but not using in any Adobe projects. These are candidates for archiving or deleting – a simple one-click process thanks to Curator’s archive connectors.

If you’re migrating to an entirely new storage environment, Curator Project Connect can automatically migrate media files used in your Adobe projects to your new storage location. Crucially, it also updates all media references in project files. This means you don’t have to manually relink all of a project’s media when you open the project file after migrating to your new storage.

Overall, Curator Project Connect is a workflow automation tool that helps you take control of your storage. It lets you see which files aren’t being used and easily migrate Adobe projects to new storage infrastructures without lengthy manual processes. We’ve designed the system in order to help you save time and create more content.

IPV at WFX 2018 – how worship facilities can use media asset management to create better video

IPV is exhibiting at this year's WFX conference & expo where stand 1003 will show visitors how media asset management can help users create better media.

For the first time, media asset management specialist IPV will be bringing its Curator platform to visitors of WFX, the largest dedicated church conference and expo in the United States. At the show, IPV will demonstrate to visitors how production teams within churches and houses of worship can use media management workflows to secure their media assets, improve efficiency and create better video content for their followers.

“Many operations are increasingly taking advantage of the growing expectation for video content. Churches and worship facilities across the world are well positioned to create their own media in order to inform and engage their followers,” said Nigel Booth, IPV’s VP sales and marketing. “It’s for this reason that we decided to exhibit at WFX for the first time this year – we want to show how media asset management workflows can really make a difference to any content-creating operation no matter the size or available resources.”

On stand 1003 IPV will be demonstrating Curator, their media asset management system, which offers key search-and-find benefits. Instead of storing media on tape, leaving it vulnerable to damage and making old content hard to find, assets can be uploaded to the Curator system. Using the intuitive Curator Clip Link interface, visitors will learn how production teams can then easily search all of their media by keyword and push content to other platforms straight from Clip Link. Creative teams will also see how they can log interesting points within media content during ingest or live streaming to make it easy to find the most relevant clips later.

Using Curator for Adobe, production teams will see how easy it is to search media repositories and edit content whether it’s stored locally or remotely. With IPV’s heritage of streaming proxies, it’s ideally placed to show production teams how they can create more even when they don’t have access to high-resolution content or much bandwidth for file transfer. When operating across several locations, users can still easily edit media to continue creating the best content possible, even when operating remotely.

IPV will be demonstrating the Curator media asset management system on booth number 1003 throughout the WFX Conference & Expo which runs between November 13 and 15 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.
