Protecting investments made in creating video is important for any content producer. And that’s no different for church video production. IPV’s Rebecca Lindley was recently published on Worship Facilities, one of the leading publications in technology and facilities for houses of worship. Here, she spoke about how churches can benefit from using media management tools, like IPV’s Curator.
This is the first of two articles. Come back next week to hear about how church video production can be taken to the next level by taking advantage of remote editing functionality and artificial intelligence.

How churches can protect their investments with better media management
Thanks to the internet, any organization can create and share video content to connect them to interested parties. And churches are well-positioned to take advantage of this opportunity – facilities all over the country already spend time and money on video content that engages and inspires followers. But are they using it effectively to promote the church and reach new audiences?
Video comes with challenges – it needs to be stored safely, and easy to find and share. By using a media management solution, churches can solve these problems and quickly grow their audiences.
Securing your video assets
Creating and distributing video content is a powerful tool in keeping your congregation in the know and to train or inform. Followers can keep up to date on all the events, activities and speaking engagements going on at the church throughout the week via its video output. Being more approachable to potential followers also means churches can use video to create an online, social media-based community that’s just as engaged as their in-person congregation.
However, if you’ve invested in video production technology, you’ll need to make sure your content is stored safely. Many organizations leave video assets on hard drives on their premises, which is easy – until you need to find a particular clip or there’s a disaster. If it’s on a hard drive somewhere, just finding content for reuse will take time before you find the right clip. Or in the case of a disaster, you’ve lost your content completely, wasting the time and resources you used to create it.
Luckily, putting in place a video production workflow to manage any volume of content isn’t as expensive or as hard as you’d think. And by doing this, you’ll be able to get your content in the right storage to make sure that it’s not at risk from factors outside your control.
Getting more from your video assets
Introducing a video workflow doesn’t just have security benefits – you’ll also really begin to get rewards from your media. Using media asset management software, for example, helps video producers work faster and more efficiently than if they were searching through file structures on a computer. It also automatically or intelligently performs many jobs to make church video production as fast and efficient as possible.
A media management system acts as the central access point to video assets. You use a single interface to search and find assets, wherever they’re stored.
Finding the right message
Just because video content has been shot, edited and distributed, doesn’t mean it’s the end of its shelf life. Reusing it means you’ll be able to generate the best return on your investment into a video production workflow. Being able to easily search for and find your video assets is perhaps the most important thing for ongoing content creation.
To make this as easy as possible, a management platform lets you add metadata tags to content when it’s added – or ingested – to the system. This could be the names of sermons or psalms or more general terms like topics or themes. These can then be searched so you can really quickly find content using the terms you know you’re interested in.
Pre-determined tags can also be created and quickly added when content is being ingested. So, the names of speakers can be added and any of their sermons quickly attributed to them. Then, when you need to create some video content to promote an upcoming event featuring that speaker, all you need to do is select their name and everything they’ve done appears.
Making a big impact with video
Beyond making search-and-find functions as easy as possible, media management systems can also perform lots of jobs you’d otherwise need to do manually, effectively acting as a built-in assistant. They can be used to introduce new media to your projects, conform assets into a common format, help with video editing and manage the delivery of completed content to wherever it needs to go.
It’s this ease of use that many large media organizations benefit from in using a media asset management system. They make the creation of the highest-quality video content easier than it’s ever been. Users are able to create video workflows in a way that best suits them and their video production needs.
And by deploying a system in the same way, churches are in a great position to take advantage of video in order to engage and build a community.
